Seeds are usually pretty dry and they have an outer coating called the seed coat. When seeds are planted they take in water from the soil. This makes them expand and the seed coat cracks open. Inside the seed coat is an embryo, which is a small root and a small shoot and some food for the root and shoot. The root appears first and grows downwards, then the shoot appears later.
