U235 is a “fissile material” which means it undergoes a continuous nuclear chain reaction. This reaction generates energy (heat). If heat is generated slowly, the heat can be used to heat water into steam to generate electricity. If heat is generated very quickly in an uncontrolled way, a nuclear explosion will happen.
