I mostly use an X-ray machine to scan rocks. Just like a CT scan in a hospital.

I use lots of machines to test how strong materials are. We can stretch them, bend them, squash them or bash them until they break and we can measure how hard it is to break them. We also use microscopes to look at the broken pieces to understand how and why the materials break.

I use microscopes to look at my shells, big ovens and liquid chemicals to separate other chemicals that tell me what the environment was like in the past and how old shells are.

I use lots of different machines in my job – I am very lucky. I use furnaces to turn chemical into new materials and then I investigate what has happened by using microscopes and Xray machines. I make batteries from the new materials and test how much energy they can store – for this i need to use special tools to carefully build the battery and the test it.

I do chemical synthesis, so I need a lot of different tools! Everything from glassware to various heating or cooling apparatus and different machines for chemical analysis and separation. Some people like to use the analogy of cooking to describe synthesis, and likewise we use a whole range of different tools and ingredients!
