Wasps have been around a long time. There are fossils showing that wasps were around 150 – 200 million years ago, about the same time as dinsoaurs. They make their nests in old empty animal burrows or in holes in trees or buildings.
Wasps feed on other insects and often attack insects that are pests. Without wasps, lots of other insects would overrun our gardens and fields.
